Skin Using Retinoids or Recently Stopped Retinoids. DIVA Poipet explains Common Presentations and Why Does This Condition Appear?.

Introduction

Retinoids are a group of active ingredients with value in managing acne, pigmentation, and ageing, but they can also make skin drier, peeling, and more sensitive during the adjustment period. Before a peel, laser, microneedling, or waxing, disclosing the type of retinoid, concentration, frequency, and duration of use is very important for assessing skin tolerance.

Common Presentations

Watch: real treatment media from DIVA. Individual results vary.

Skin overloaded by retinoids may feel tight, burning, and peel around the mouth and nose, become red, or react sensitively to water and basic products. Some people may not peel but still have a more sensitive barrier. Stopping for only a few days does not mean skin has fully recovered; actual skin condition matters more than only counting days.

Why Does This Condition Appear?

Tolerance depends on the retinoid form, concentration, application amount, frequency, accompanying products, weather, and baseline skin. Combining retinoids with acids, benzoyl peroxide, or strong exfoliants can increase irritation. Oral retinoids such as isotretinoin also have systemic effects and need medical management.

Approaches That Commonly Make the Problem Worse

A mistake is hiding retinoid use out of fear that treatment will be postponed, or self-stopping on a fixed online schedule and assuming every procedure is then safe. Another mistake is applying more to get results faster and considering peeling and burning mandatory.

How Does DIVA Assess It?

DIVA asks for the product name, whether it is prescription or cosmetic, how many times per week it is used, the most recent reaction, and planned procedures. If skin is still red and burning, recovery is the priority. With oral isotretinoin, discussion with the treating doctor is needed and the timing of intervention should not be decided independently.

Why Is Personalisation Needed?

At DIVA, the name of a concern is only the starting point. Two clients using the same word to describe their skin may have completely different causes, degrees of inflammation, recovery capacity, and goals. Therefore, the method is not selected only from one photo or from a service name the client has heard elsewhere. An in-person assessment helps determine what should be done today, what should be postponed, and what the client needs to support at home.

Treatment Direction at the Clinic

There is no single pause interval that applies to everyone and every procedure. The decision is based on intervention type, invasiveness, location, and skin condition. Some gentle steps may be performed when skin is stable; stronger procedures may need a longer postponement period and medical assessment.

Why Should Too Many Things Not Be Done at Once?

An important principle is not to try to address every issue in the same session. When skin has several goals, DIVA prioritises the concern with the greatest effect on safety or outcomes and then moves to the next stage. This approach can feel slower than doing a great deal at once, but it reduces accumulated inflammation and allows observation of how skin responds to each step.

The Role of At-Home Care

During a sensitive period, the routine should reduce irritants, increase suitable moisturising care, and include monitoring. When retinoids are reintroduced, they should be increased gradually according to tolerance rather than immediately returning to the old frequency. Do not self-combine additional acids to compensate for the time retinoids were stopped.

Assessing Results Over Time

Results should not be assessed only by how skin feels immediately after a service. Some early visible changes are due to moisture, mild swelling, or lighting; structural and pigment changes need more time. Before-and-after photos should be taken from the same angle, in the same lighting, and with the same skin condition to avoid misunderstanding. When progress does not match expectations, the plan needs adjustment rather than continued repetition of one method.

When Is Medical Assessment Needed?

Spreading redness, oedema, cracks with discharge, pain, inflammation around the eyes or mouth, rash across the body, or unusual symptoms while using oral medication need medical assessment. Do not continue aesthetic procedures while skin has not been assessed.

DIVA’s Perspective

Retinoids are not a concern to avoid completely. The issue is coordinating the timing between at-home treatment and procedures correctly. Honest disclosure helps reduce risk and preserve the long-term benefits of this active ingredient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this condition improve on its own? Some cases may change over time if the cause of inflammation or irritation has stopped. However, when the problem keeps recurring, leaves dark marks or scars, or affects daily life, early assessment helps avoid prolonged issues and reduces the risk of treatment in the wrong direction.

Can I start with one session? Yes. DIVA prioritises beginning with one suitable session to assess the actual response. After the first session, clients receive care guidance and clear monitoring milestones; there is no need to purchase a long package before knowing how skin responds.

How long should I wait before reassessment? The reassessment timeframe depends on the degree of inflammation, type of concern, and method performed. Do not draw conclusions after only a few days if skin is still recovering. DIVA usually bases the decision to maintain, reduce, or change treatment direction on progression, photos under the same conditions, and the at-home response.

Note: This article provides general information and does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. DIVA does not use the title of doctor and will refer clients to a medical facility when a concern is outside the scope of aesthetics.
