What Is Pico Laser? Mechanism, Indications, Limitations, Recovery, and Combination

What Is Pico Laser? Mechanism, Indications, Limitations, Recovery, and Combination. DIVA Poipet explains How Pico laser works and Situations that may be considered.

DIVA Skin Clinic Poipet

Clients commonly know Pico laser as a technology for melasma, freckles, post-acne marks, tattoos, and brightening. However, the name “Pico” does not automatically mean that every pigmentation concern can be managed in the same way. Results depend on the pigment type, depth, colour, skin foundation, energy level, treatment handpiece, and post-treatment care.

  • How Pico laser works

Pico laser delivers very short pulses and creates a photoacoustic effect that breaks pigment clusters into smaller particles for the body to continue processing. Compared with some longer-pulse systems, Pico may reduce the time heat remains in tissue. Nevertheless, the skin is still affected and can still develop redness, temporary darkening, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation if settings or care are unsuitable.

Some Pico handpieces also create micro-effects within the skin to support the surface, pores, and shallow scars. This is a different objective from treating pigment spots, so all Pico treatments should not be regarded as the same service.

  • Situations that may be considered

Pico is commonly considered for freckles, sunspots, post-acne marks, some superficial pigmentation concerns, tattoos, and uneven skin tone. For pores or texture, Pico may have a supportive role when the concern is not too deep.

Melasma requires caution. It can involve sunlight, hormones, genetics, inflammation, and the skin barrier. Laser affects only one part of the concern. If clients receive only laser but do not use sun protection, control irritation, or maintain home care, pigmentation can return or become more difficult to manage.

  • Situations that may not be suitable immediately

Skin with significant inflammation, irritation, burning and peeling, open wounds, or recent use of multiple strong active ingredients is commonly not suitable for Pico immediately. People with a history of severe post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation also need careful assessment.

Pico should not be performed only because a client requests a device by name. It is necessary to identify where pigment is located, the current skin condition, and whether the objective is spot removal, a more even tone, or surface improvement.

  • Limitations of Pico

Pico does not completely remove every type of melasma, cannot replace home care, and is not always the best option for deep scars. For clear pitted scars, CO₂ Fractional, RF Microneedling, subcision, or other restructuring methods may be more appropriate.

Results should not be assessed only after a few days. Some pigment areas may become temporarily darker before gradually lightening. Treating too aggressively to seek rapid results can increase inflammation and prolong recovery.

  • Recovery after Pico

After treatment, skin may become mildly red, warm, dry, or darker at treated spot areas. Clients need serious sun protection, gentle cleansing, moisturising, and should avoid picking dry areas.

Acids, retinoids, exfoliants, or strong brightening products commonly need to be paused in the initial stage, depending on treatment level and skin response. If burning redness persists, blistering occurs, pain increases, or pigmentation spreads, clients need to contact the provider for assessment.

  • What can Pico be combined with?

Pico can be combined with gentle peel, pigmentation-support mesotherapy, recovery care, or an appropriate home-care plan. However, combination does not mean doing as much as possible in one session.

If skin is weakened, recovery may be more important than adding another strong method. For mixed pigmentation, each layer or objective may need to be managed at different times.

  • DIVA’s Perspective

At DIVA, Pico is not treated as a “product” that clients choose by advertising alone. The first step is identifying the main concern, degree of pigmentation, recovery capacity, and risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Clients can begin with one suitable session. The final method is chosen after a skin assessment and clear quotation before treatment. In some cases Pico is the main tool. In others, it is only supportive. In some cases, treatment needs to be postponed while the skin foundation recovers first.

Conclusion

Pico laser is a valuable technology when it is used for the right indication, objective, and treatment level. It can support pigmentation, tattoos, and part of the skin surface, but it does not replace assessment of the cause, sun protection, and long-term care.

What matters is not how many Pico sessions the skin has received, but whether each session moves the skin closer to the objective without creating additional injury.
